Has Your Skin Suddenly Changed After 40? The “Collagen Cliff” Explained

Why mature skin needs a personalised strategy—not another random facial or viral quick fix

Have you looked in the mirror and felt that your skin changed almost overnight?

Your usual moisturiser no longer feels like enough. Makeup sits differently. Your jawline looks softer. Fine lines, uneven texture or pigmentation suddenly seem more noticeable.

If this is happening in your 40s or 50s, you are not imagining it. Skin changes throughout life, but the hormonal changes around perimenopause and menopause can make those changes feel faster and more obvious.

The beauty industry has given this phase a dramatic name: the “collagen cliff”.

The phrase has helped open an important conversation about mature skin, but it is also an oversimplification. Your skin does not suddenly fail on a particular birthday, and collagen is only one part of the story.

What does the “collagen cliff” really mean?

Collagen provides important structural support within the skin.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, women’s skin can lose about 30% of its collagen during the first five years of menopause. After that, the decline is more gradual—about 2% each year for the following 20 years.

This helps explain why firmness, lines and facial contours can appear to change over a relatively short period. However, it does not predict exactly what will happen to you.

Genetics, cumulative sun exposure, smoking, stress, sleep, general health, hormonal changes and your starting skin condition can all influence how your skin changes.

Collagen is not the only consideration. Mature skin may hold less water, become thinner or more reactive, recover more slowly, and show years of accumulated sun exposure through uneven tone and pigmentation.

Changes in facial fat, muscle and bone also affect how the face looks. No cream, facial or device can address every one of these factors.

The first step is daily sun protection

Cancer Council Australia confirms that sunscreen helps protect against photo-ageing, including wrinkles and skin discolouration.

In Perth, protecting your skin from ultraviolet exposure is a year-round foundation—not an optional extra added after professional treatment.

A sensible home routine, appropriate active ingredients, hydration and consistent sun protection matter. Professional treatments should build on those foundations, not pretend to replace them.

Why one facial is rarely the complete answer

A single facial may leave your skin feeling softer or looking brighter. There is nothing wrong with enjoying that.

The problem begins when a temporary glow is sold as a complete answer to mature skin.

Different concerns respond differently. Uneven surface texture and superficial pigmentation need a different approach from reduced firmness or changes in facial contours. Dry or reactive skin may require a slower starting point.

A treatment that suits one woman at 45 may not suit another woman at 58—even if both describe their concern as “ageing”.

More treatment is not automatically a better strategy. The right treatment, in the right order and at a realistic frequency is what matters.

The useful idea behind treatment stacking

Another current beauty term is “treatment stacking”: using complementary technologies because each has a different job.

The useful part of this idea is not squeezing as many treatments as possible into one appointment. It is understanding that one technology is rarely the best option for every concern.

At Beauty on Arabella, treatments may be combined in one appointment or carefully sequenced over time. Every inclusion must have a clear reason, suit your skin and fit your priorities and budget.

If one treatment is enough, I will not add another simply because combining treatments is fashionable.

How I build your Skin Strategy

Assess

We begin with what concerns you, what has changed, what outcome would feel worthwhile and what you are comfortable investing in.

I look at your individual starting point rather than assuming your age tells me what your skin needs.

Plan

I explain which concerns may respond to non-invasive treatment, which technology has a reason to be included, the likely timeframe and where the limitations are.

Your plan may use one treatment or a carefully selected combination.

Treat, track and adjust

Visible improvement is generally progressive.

We track your response, compare baseline photographs where appropriate and adjust your plan rather than continuing a program simply because it was written at the beginning.

How Beauty on Arabella’s technologies may fit

LPG Endermologie uses non-invasive mechanical skin stimulation.

For the face, I may select it when firmness, facial contours or tissue quality are priorities. Your treatment is personalised by area, treatment time and response rather than performed as the same routine on every face.

Bloomea combines macro-exfoliation, micro-vibration and red light in a structured resurfacing treatment.

It may be included when the priorities include uneven texture, visible pores, fine lines, superficial pigmentation or post-acne marks.

Its role is targeted skin resurfacing—not aggressive exfoliation for its own sake.

Omnilux red and near-infrared LED may support collagen production, skin renewal and recovery when the device and routine are appropriate.

Consistency matters more than purchasing a device and using it only occasionally.

These technologies do not all need to be used. They also do not replace medical treatment, injectables or surgery.

They are options for women seeking progressive, non-invasive improvement with realistic expectations.

What I will—and will not—promise

I will not promise to stop ageing, replace all lost collagen or undo decades of change in one appointment.

I will not recommend a treatment merely because it is trending. If something is outside my scope or should be assessed by a GP or dermatologist, I will tell you.

What I can offer is an honest starting point: thoughtful guidance, a reason for every recommendation, clear expectations and a plan that can change as your skin responds.

The goal is not to chase somebody else’s face. It is to help your skin look firmer, smoother, healthier and naturally lifted through a strategy that respects you.

Start with your skin—not a treatment menu

You do not need to decide whether you need LPG, Bloomea or LED before booking. That is exactly what the New Client Skin Strategy Session is for.

Your 1-hour-and-15-minute appointment is A$50 and takes place at my private, appointment-only clinic in The Vines, Perth.

The session includes:

  • A structured conversation about your concerns and priorities

  • Baseline photographs

  • A 30-minute LPG Endermologie experience

  • A personalised Skin Strategy explaining the recommended treatment pathway, frequency and progression

The A$50 is redeemable against your first treatment plan when you book that plan on the day of your session.

Frequently asked questions

Is the “collagen cliff” a medical diagnosis?

No. It is a popular phrase describing the faster collagen loss many women experience around menopause.

It does not happen at one exact age and does not describe every change visible in mature skin.

Can non-invasive treatments replace all lost collagen?

No. Non-invasive technologies may support skin quality and improve the appearance of concerns such as firmness, texture, fine lines and uneven tone.

Results vary and limitations matter. These treatments cannot replace lost facial volume, surgery or medical care.

Do I need to know which treatment to book?

We start with your concerns and decide whether one treatment, a planned combination or referral to another professional is the sensible next step.
